Preparing for my language stay: some tips
Preparing for a language stay requires a methodical approach. There's no point in rushing... but you do need to prepare in time.
What should I do to properly prepare for my language stay?
In chronological order, step by step:
– Check your identity documents… and take them with you on the day of departure. A identity card (if staying in Europe) or passport is required for any stay in or outside Europe. Don't wait until the last minute to apply for your identity card or passport (allow one to ten days to obtain it from your local town hall).
– Have a parental authorization to leave the country by the local municipality (or a notary or lawyer) if your child is under 18 at the time of departure and only has an identity card. If your child has a valid passport, this serves as parental authorization to leave the country. We will provide you with a blank copy upon request.
– British authorities also require a document signed by the parents in English if your child is a minor at the time of departure; our partner schools generally provide us with this document which we attach to the travel/stay documents that we will give you at the time of departure.
Packing a travel bag or suitcase is an art! Be careful not to exceed the weight limits if you or your child are flying (generally 23 kg max. for checked baggage + 7 kg max. for carry-on baggage on long-haul flights; 15 or 20 kg depending on the airline for flights within European airspace). We provide a sample packing list for trips for minors.
– Make photocopies of all your identity documents and keep them somewhere other than your wallet; this will allow you to prove your identity if you lose your passport or identity card.
Languages & Travel will provide you with a Dropbox link to your online file , allowing you to access all your travel documents from anywhere, at any time, as long as you have an internet connection and a computer. If you lose your paper documents, no problem, simply access your online file. And if you lose the link, Languages & Travel will resend it to you.
