How to choose the right destination for your language stay?
Are you more of a London or New York person? Sydney or Melbourne? Antwerp or Amsterdam? Toronto or Vancouver? Wellington or Auckland? It's not easy to decide with so many dreamy cities to choose from! How do you choose the perfect destination for your language immersion trip? That's what Languages and Travel, your agency in Brussels and throughout Belgium, is here to help you discover. Let the games begin!
Tell me who you are and I'll tell you where to go. Between the fun factor, the need to learn, and the desire for a change of scenery, the question often comes up: how do you choose your language immersion destination? While there's no single right answer, here are a few things to consider to help you decide.
English language immersion trip: London or New York?
Between the Big Apple, New York, and the Big Smoke, or London, how do you know where to do the best language immersion program? Aside from the distance between our country and these two countries, and therefore the cost of airfare, if you're planning to travel to one of these cities, it's because you love the dynamic atmosphere and frenetic energy of major metropolises. In either case, boredom is simply not an option! We could list the number of theaters, museums, and concert venues, but ultimately it doesn't matter; you'll have plenty of time to enjoy them in both London and New York! However, English, and therefore the American accent, differs from that of the United Kingdom. A good way to decide is to align your choice with your professional goals or the language test you choose to take to boost your CV, for example! It's also worth noting that the cost of living is high in England, just as it is in the United States.
Proximity: advantage London.
Immersion: advantage New York.
Australia: Sydney or Melbourne to go on a VVT?
These two destinations are very regularly among the most pleasant cities in the world! This shows that the choice, however complicated it may seem, is actually a real non-issue. Art and culture are to Melbourne what cool surfer style is to Sydney, thanks in particular to its beautiful surrounding beaches such as Palm Beach and Whale Beach. It's also possible to travel to Bondi Beach or Manly Beach. While Sydney receives more rain but also more sunshine, accommodation is more expensive. Meanwhile, Australia's artistic capital, further south and therefore cooler, blends street art, trendy nightlife, and more sophisticated cuisine. Whatever your decision, you'll certainly feel at home quickly on the other side of the world!
Climate and beaches: Sydney has the advantage.
Culture and prices: Melbourne has the advantage.
Dutch lessons: Antwerp or Amsterdam?
The heart of Flemish culture versus the charms of Amsterdam: Dam Square, its canals, its typical narrow streets… Choosing a destination for learning Dutch through immersion can be more complicated than it seems. Smaller in size, Antwerp, Belgium's second-largest city, offers more options when it comes to language courses. Again, accent and your target language learning goals will also make the difference. Known for the sometimes "out there" pronunciation of its inhabitants, Amsterdam boasts a more developed cultural scene and a wider range of tourist activities. In both cases, our training centers are small, friendly language schools where we do excellent work and provide personalized attention .
Art and fashion: Antwerp has the advantage. A
change of scenery and sightseeing: Amsterdam has the advantage.
In Canada, will it be Toronto or Vancouver?
West Coast: Vancouver; East Coast: Toronto. While Vancouver often tops international city rankings, Toronto also has its own appeal! Two contrasting lifestyles: a North American lifestyle, cold winters, but a constant buzz—these are the hallmarks of Toronto. Often described as Canada's most beautiful city, Vancouver is nestled between mountains and ocean and enjoys a temperate climate. More expensive, the city is also considered less jovial than its eastern counterpart, where just under half the population doesn't speak English as their first language.
Multiculturalism and friendliness: Toronto's advantage.
Quality of life, nature: Vancouver's advantage.
Heading to Auckland or Wellington in New Zealand?
Despite appearances, such as the size of the two cities, Wellington is indeed the capital of the land of the long white cloud. Trendy and more laid-back, "Windywelli," as it's nicknamed for its frequent gusts of wind, certainly offers fewer professional opportunities for those wishing to work on a Working Holiday Visa in New Zealand . In Auckland, once the rigors of work or classes are over, excursion opportunities abound: Coromandel, the Northland Islands, the surf beaches of Waikato…
Cool atmosphere and human scale: Wellington's advantage.
Activities and job opportunities: Auckland's advantage.
