Is there an ideal time to visit Australia? Summer to enjoy the long days? Spring to have time to acclimatize to the heat? Winter to perhaps go skiing? Most people would say that summer is obviously the best time to visit the country. But in reality, Australia is so vast that no single average time works.
Summer (December to February)
In Australia, summer is hot and glorious, the days are long and the nights are clear, and there are crowds and activities everywhere… which is perfectly normal since it's the holiday season for locals (so the beaches are packed too). The season is a delight if you enjoy this kind of atmosphere. But it's not the only time to visit Australia. Especially since, during peak season, life can also become very expensive (in major cities, accommodation prices can increase by 25%) and temperatures soar (avoid the central part of the country if you want to visit places like Alice Springs) where the thermometer regularly climbs above 40°C. In the far north, it's also the rainy season, so rainfall is relatively frequent.
Spring (September to November) & Autumn (March to May)
Most people will say that spring and autumn are the ideal times to visit Australia. They're not wrong 😉 September is also the time of year when the most young people choose to travel to coincide with the start of the following academic year. During these two seasons, you'll experience a mix of weather, depending on your location. But generally speaking, sunshine and mild temperatures are almost guaranteed. These are also less crowded times, and shopkeepers tend to be more relaxed. It's worth noting that the fall colours are particularly stunning in Victoria and Tasmania.
Winter (June to August)
But what about winter in Australia, what's commonly called the low season? The timing isn't as bad as you might think. If you're still hoping for warm weather, head to Cairns. The Gold Coast (with its 18°C on the best days) will satisfy you. If the "cold" doesn't bother you, go further south. Melbourne experiences rather rainy winters, while Tasmania has a glacier (snow is mainly found on its highest peak). The South enjoys cool and rainy weather, unlike the North where the season remains mild and sunny. The idea of only traveling in summer is therefore a myth. Of course, some seasonal activities won't be available, but the winter atmosphere can be just as special. Note that the decrease in visitor numbers leads to shorter opening hours for tourist sites.
The best answer is… all year round! So, when should you go to Australia? The answer is actually all year round! Whether you're planning a road trip, living for a few months, or looking for work, the city and month you arrive in Australia will be important depending on your plans. For those on a Working Holiday Visa, fruit farms operate and hire year-round thanks to the country's vast 4,000-kilometer length and diverse seasons. While some farms undertake cleaning and preparation work during the colder months to be ready for spring and summer, restaurants, cafes, and bars will always need staff. The same goes for hostels. So go to Australia whenever you want. You'll find the perfect place no matter the season. Just remember to plan your itinerary accordingly 😉
