Staying abroad: which accommodation option should you choose?
Homestay, university residence, shared accommodation… Between the desire for independence and the will to improve in the target language, choosing the best option when booking a language stay remains a real headache for some. Languages and Travel provides you with an overview of the advantages and disadvantages of each option!
Accommodation for language stays
First and foremost, it's important to clarify that there's unfortunately no easy answer. Your age, personality, and destination will influence your final decision, which ultimately rests with you. But after reading these few lines, you'll quickly realize that choosing accommodation for your stay abroad isn't such a dilemma after all!
Host family: immerse yourself in a new culture
The first few hours with your host family can sometimes seem long, very long. And for good reason: whether it's English, German, or Spanish, your host family will speak to you freely, using their own accent and vocabulary. It's tough to understand everything right away when classes haven't even started! Don't panic, that's precisely the advantage of immersion: listening, speaking, and practicing in a language that isn't your own to make yourself understood, and vice versa. Worried about getting bored? Any reputable host family will offer activities outside of your time at the language center. You'll also often have the choice between half-board (room + breakfast) or full-board (room + breakfast + dinner), in a single or double room. These are additional options to help you decide whether or not you want to stay put.
University residence: a good compromise for more mature students
For some more independent travelers, homestays aren't always the best option. But if you don't want to be far from school and find yourself in the urban jungle of a city like London, Sydney, or New York, then a university residence is for you. However, be aware that this turnkey solution, just steps from the classrooms, isn't always available, as not all schools offer it. Halfway between a host family and a studio apartment, this type of accommodation during your language stay will allow you to meet other students from the school and spend your free time exploring… or partying! It's often the preferred option for more mature students who can find a balance between work and personal life.
Shared accommodation: Spanish hostel style
Who hasn't dreamed of living surrounded by foreigners from all over Europe… or even the world? Sharing an apartment during a language immersion program will allow you to experience this feeling. It's also a great option if you want to be independent, reduce costs by splitting expenses, and practice the language(s) while meeting other students. However, it's important to find a balance. Sharing an apartment can lead to late nights out… and oversleeping! But it's in class that you'll truly develop your speaking skills while listening to your native-speaking teacher speak flawlessly.
L&T's opinion : Staying with a local remains THE best option for personal growth. Especially since life isn't as peaceful as it seems, contrary to popular belief. However, don't force yourself. It's a well-known fact: you can't change your nature! If you're looking for a certain level of independence (meal times, going out, etc.), then opt for a residence or shared accommodation. In any case, carefully consider the purpose of your trip!
And what is your opinion based on your experience?
